You’ve heard me say it: Before you take advice from anyone, be sure you know how she learned the lesson. Joyce Shulman lays out her hard-knocks education for you in the prologue to Walk Your Way To Better: 99 Walks That Will Change Your Life. After a quick run-through of both the highs and lows of her life, she explains, “Walking has saved me more times than I can count.” Literally, she has walked the walk.
You already know that walking can help you lose weight and improve your physical health. You’ve probably heard that it improves mood, helps to reverse a number of health conditions and even enhance mental ability. Shulman is on board with all that, but none of it is the purpose of her book. Her goal here is to demonstrate how to, as the title says, walk your way to better.
There are ninety-nine sections, each opening with a background story and wrapping with a thought to contemplate while walking. Each section also includes a short, easy “assignment,” such as “…create a list titles ‘15 Minutes for Me,’” or “Consider what work you need to do to …commit to working for change,” or “Count the wins.”
It seems as if everyone is wearing fitness trackers these days. Well, here’s multitasking at its best. Shulman’s method is also about as flexible as self-improvement gets, too. You don’t have to do the 99 exercises in order, and you don’t have to do them all; innovate. Use her process as a jumping-off point to walk your way to your own version of better.
Full disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book.

Book Summary
This is a book about walking your way to better. Everywhere you turn, people, podcasts and gurus promise a simple path to the life you want. But few of them work. Why? Because simply reading the words is rarely enough to call your heart and mind to action. This book is different. Each section provides a thought-starter, insight or story. But I don’t want you to just read it. I want you to read a section and then lace up your sneakers and head out the door. Because while walking, your brain processes in a unique way, enabling you to recognize the things that are truly holding your back and the changes you actually need to make. You will literally Walk Your Way to Better. Along the way, you will forge a powerful connection between your mind and your body. And bonus — you’ll feel better and become fitter.
