Kiss of Salt review and summary

“It’s a blissful place to stumble into….Until you discover the secrets that linger behind closed doors….”

𝐊𝐈𝐒𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐓  is a slow-burn, atmospheric crime mystery set on the sunny beaches of Goa, India. It is the first of the Darya Nandkarni mysteries. Think ‘Murder, She Wrote’ with a multicultural flavour.

Three charming houses sit isolated and secure on Heliconia Lane, well-tended and well-loved. It’s a little like living in Heaven; but the peace of mind any of its residents felt is stripped away when one of them, bright and beautiful Farideh, disappears without a trace.

Years later, when Darya Nandkari arrives to close out her late Uncle Paritosh’s affairs, she immediately finds herself embroiled in the long-unsolved mystery of his wife’s disappearance. An intruder in Paritosh’s house, the disturbing photo taken just before Farideh’s disappearance, and an uneasy encounter with a bizarre bookseller all contribute to Darya’s sense of uneasiness.

No one will listen to her concerns, and no one wants to discuss the past.

As Darya continues to push for answers, more demons rise up from the houses on Heliconia Lane. It turns out that there are family secrets on all sides, and some of them are deadly.

Smita Bhattarcharya’s Spartan yet softly elegant prose is mesmerizing. Even as she lays out the plain facts of her tale, she manages to create a layer of menace that hovers over the page. Smart and enchanting Darya is one of the most intriguing sleuths to appear in years, and she is the perfect lead in this unique spin on a Christie-esque story.
