An Abbreviated List of Some of My Favorite Books and Movies About Friendship
Any list of book recommendations is, of course, highly personal and subjective. It is based entirely on one’s own discriminating tastes, preferences, and limited life experience. No one author has read or taken in all that has ever been written or recorded on the topic of friendship – me included! Therefore, I can only offer what I am most familiar with in the impact, influence, and nature of friendship, and that of course has its own limitations. In my mind, any “list” of selected books – and films, which to me are integrally important – should at least attempt to demonstrate a diverse range of the innumerable possibilities and complexities of friendship, which is what I offer below.
No such list is exhaustive nor complete, yet may be viewed instead as a starting place for understanding. I have given this brief write-up a notation of “Some of…” as a more exhaustive list would be beyond the scope of space and possibly readership interest.
That said, there are a good many fictional and non-fiction accountings of friendship across time and culture that I have found very meaningful and impactful on my life, and, indirectly, on my friendships. Among these are:
Narcissus and Goldmund and Siddhartha (Hermann Hesse), The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini), The Book Thief (Markus Zusak), A Separate Peace (John Knowles), Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Rebecca Wells), A Prayer for Owen Meany (John Irving), Lust for Life (Irving Howe), Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck), Charlotte’s Web (E.B. White), Tuesdays with Morrie (Mitch Albom), The Undoing Project (Michael Lewis), and Truth and Beauty (Ann Patchett).
I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the impact and poignancy of some of my favorite movies on friendship as well: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008), Thelma and Louise (1991), Dead Poets Society (1989), Girl, Interrupted (1999), Stand By Me (1986), Bucket List (2008), Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Cinema Paradiso (1998), The Joy Luck Club (1993), Hidden Figures (2016), Brian’s Song (1971), Born Free (1966), Good Will Hunting (1997), Analyze This (1999), and The Help (2011).
